How to Grow Butterfly Weed in a Texas Garden

If you want to grow a milkweed that is both beautiful and remarkably tough, orange milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa) deserves a place near the top of the list. Also commonly called butterfly weed, this Texas native produces vivid orange flower clusters from late spring into summer and can continue blooming well into late summer under good conditions.

Unlike some milkweeds, butterfly weed doesn’t have the familiar milky sap that gives the genus its name. Instead, it forms an attractive upright clump with narrow leaves and a substantial taproot that helps it withstand heat and drought.

Butterfly weed is one of those plants that becomes more impressive the longer you grow it.

The relationship isn’t limited to caterpillars, either. The flowers are an important nectar source for adult butterflies and other pollinators.

One interesting point for North Texas gardeners is that butterfly weed may not be among the monarch’s most frequently used milkweeds in the DFW area. Local observations indicate that monarchs use several native milkweed species, and butterfly weed is one of many options available rather than necessarily being their first choice.

That doesn’t make it a poor monarch plant. It means it works best as part of a diverse collection of native milkweeds rather than as the only milkweed in a butterfly garden.

More Than Monarchs

Butterfly weed attracts a surprisingly broad range of flower visitors. Butterflies visiting the flowers can include monarchs, queens, swallowtails, skippers, sulphurs, and fritillaries, while bees are particularly frequent visitors.

  • It is surprisingly tolerant of soil type. Although sandy, sharply drained soil is often recommended, Texas butterfly weed can also grow in clay, loam, and limestone soils as long as excess water doesn’t remain around the roots. That distinction is particularly important in North Texas.
  • Heavy clay isn’t automatically a reason to avoid Asclepias tuberosa. Poor drainage is the bigger problem.
  • Its deep taproot makes it exceptionally drought tolerant once established. In fact, excessive moisture can be considerably more damaging than dry conditions. Butterfly weed is more likely to suffer from too much water than too little.

This makes it an excellent choice for the hot, sunny portions of a Texas garden where other plants need frequent irrigation.

  • Spring is an excellent time to establish butterfly weed once the soil has warmed.

Pruning and Deadheading

Butterfly weed is tough, but it is also one of those plants that attracts an entire community of insects. And that’s usually a feature rather than a flaw.

Oleander Aphids

Oleander aphids (Aphis nerii) are one of the most common insects you’ll encounter on milkweed. These small yellow-orange aphids often gather in clusters on stems, flower stalks, and new growth, sometimes in surprisingly large numbers.

On a healthy, established butterfly weed plant, they usually aren’t a serious problem. Predators such as lady beetles, lacewings, and hoverfly larvae are attracted to aphid colonies and can quickly reduce their numbers. For that reason, it is often worth giving beneficial insects a chance to do the work before intervening.

If an aphid population becomes excessive, especially on a small or newly established plant, the insects can be removed by hand or knocked from the stems with a strong stream of water.
